Marshall's previous documentary, ''Desire,'' which chronicled the experiences of gay men and lesbians in Nazi concentration camps and which was one of the biggest successes of last year's festival. The film is a more lighthearted sequel to Mr. Directed by Stuart Marshall, it interweaves their stories with archival scenes and vintage popular songs.
''Comrades in Arms,'' which opens the festival tonight, is a 50-minute British documentary in which six lesbians and gay men reminisce about their time in the armed forces in World War II. In its first year there, it presented 92 screenings over 14 days and grossed more than $110,000. When responsibility for the festival was taken over last year by the New Festival, a nonprofit arts organization, it was moved uptown to the popular West Side revival house.
